The Society of Public Health Engineers, Nepal (SOPHEN) is a dedicated non-profit organization committed to ensuring universal access to safe, affordable, and adequate drinking water and sanitation services. Established in 1990 and registered under the Social Welfare Act 2049 of the Government of Nepal, SOPHEN plays a vital role in strengthening the capacity of professionals in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector. By working closely with stakeholders, SOPHEN supports the government in enhancing WASH services nationwide, reinforcing its mission to advance public health through sustainable and equitable access to water and sanitation.
For more than three decades, SOPHEN has been at the forefront of Nepal’s WASH sector, bridging the gap between professionals, policymakers, and communities. Through public awareness campaigns, the organization highlights the importance of water and sanitation, engaging local communities to promote better hygiene practices. SOPHEN also plays a crucial role in professional development, offering training, seminars, and workshops that equip WASH professionals with the latest tools and knowledge. These efforts contribute to a skilled workforce that can implement innovative solutions to Nepal’s water and sanitation challenges.
Advocacy remains a key pillar of SOPHEN’s work, actively supporting the Government of Nepal in designing and implementing effective WASH policies and initiatives. The organization also participates in global observances such as World Water Day, World Environment Day, Global Handwashing Day, and World Toilet Day, aligning its activities with international themes to raise awareness on pressing WASH issues. These events provide a platform to engage policymakers, professionals, and the public in meaningful discussions that drive action toward better water and sanitation practices.
SOPHEN’s impact extends across all seven provinces of Nepal, creating a dynamic network of over 450 professionals specializing in water, sanitation, health, and environmental sectors. The organization is governed by an 11-member Executive Committee that ensures inclusivity, accountability, and effectiveness in its initiatives. By fostering collaboration among experts and institutions, SOPHEN strengthens Nepal’s WASH sector and promotes a holistic approach to addressing water and sanitation challenges.
At its core, SOPHEN believes that clean water and sanitation are fundamental human rights. Through its ongoing efforts in capacity building, advocacy, and community engagement, the organization continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Nepalese citizens. By joining hands with SOPHEN, individuals and institutions can contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future—one drop at a time.
